# Fishing

<figure><img src="/files/HdLz8AkqUDEOCfGkVAwb" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
▶️ **Jump in:** [Open the Fisherman's Hut shop in Pawtato Land](https://pawtato.gg/?mb=1\&move=5590:795).
{% endhint %}

Fishing takes place at **Fishing Shoals**, special locations that appear on the world map as fish icons (🐟). Each shoal has certain attributes:

* **Type** of Fish (e.g. Taterfin or Spudscale)
  * Main yield from that Shoal, but there is always a possibility for a rare catch
* **Level** of Shoal (1 - 5)
* **Remaining Supply**
* **Remaining Time**

{% hint style="warning" %}
Shoals are temporary: they vanish when their timer runs out or when their fish supply is exhausted.

When a shoal disappears, that spot enters a 9 hour cooldown before a new one can appear there.
{% endhint %}

## How to fish (step by step)

1. **Get a Fishing Rod (and, optionally, a License).** Open the [**Fisherman's Hut**](https://pawtato.gg/?mb=1\&move=5590:795) building on the world map. In its shop, select **Basic Fishing Rod** and press **Purchase** — any working rod can fish. While you're there, you can also select a **Fishing License** or **Golden Fishing License** and press **Purchase & Activate** to raise your daily catch limit (see [Fishing License](#fishing-license) below). Without a license you get 10 free catches per day.
2. **Equip the rod.** Open your Hero's equipment, select the **Main Hand** slot, and **Equip** your Fishing Rod. The rod must have Durability remaining — each fishing attempt costs 1 Durability.
3. **Find a shoal.** Zoom in on the world map until the fish-shaped **Shoal** markers (🐟) appear, then click one. Its panel shows the shoal's name, **Level**, and remaining **Supply**.
4. **Start the session.** With a Hero selected and a rod equipped, press **🎣 Start Fishing** to cast your line.
5. **Play the catch minigame.** **Hold** to reel in — click-and-hold, press the **🎣 HOLD (Space) to reel in** button, or hold the **spacebar**. Holding raises the **Tension** bar and moves your bracket up; release for slack. Keep your bracket over the fish to fill the **Catch Bar** to 100% before the timer runs out — and don't let Tension hit 100% or drop to 0%, or the line snaps / the fish escapes.
6. **Collect the catch.** On a successful catch the fish (or rare loot) is shown and added to your backpack automatically. Press **🎣 Fish Again** to cast at the same shoal again. See [Fishing Loot](#fishing-loot) for what you can reel in.

To fish at a shoal, your Hero needs:

* A **Fishing Rod** equipped in the main hand slot
  * Any working rod can attempt any shoal — there is **no hard tier requirement**. Higher-level shoals are instead balanced to be impractical without the faster catch rate of a better rod.
* The rod must have **Durability** remaining (it costs 1 Durability per fishing attempt, regardless of outcome)

#### Fishing License

To protect the environment from overfishing, every Player is allowed to catch a maximum of 10 fish every day. By purchasing a Fishing License, this limit can be increased.

<table><thead><tr><th width="358">License</th><th width="203">Limit</th><th>Validity</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>None</td><td>10 fish / day</td><td>unlimited</td></tr><tr><td><img src="/files/Y8egadNp2XG1Zlm1dY0d" alt="" data-size="line"> <strong>Fishing License</strong></td><td>25 fish / day</td><td>14 days</td></tr><tr><td><img src="/files/LFLrgkSSjmZ30bLet5GW" alt="" data-size="line"> <strong>Golden Fishing License</strong></td><td>100 fish / day</td><td>14 days</td></tr></tbody></table>

#### Fishing Minigame

Click a shoal marker on the map to open its panel, then press Start Fishing.

<figure><img src="/files/AwkD0TtjgvFmtYzkYCH4" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The minigame is a time-limited reel-in challenge with three elements:

<table><thead><tr><th width="261.99993896484375">Element</th><th>Use</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Tension Bar</strong> (left, amber)</td><td>Measures line stress, don't let it hit 100% or drop to 0%</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Fish Track</strong> (center)</td><td>The fish (black dot) moves unpredictably, your bracket must stay on it to fill the Catch bar</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Catch Bar</strong> (right, green)</td><td>Fill it to 100% to succeed</td></tr></tbody></table>

Controls: Hold (click, hold spacebar, or hold the on-screen button) to reel in - this moves your bracket upward and raises tension. Release to give slack - bracket drifts down and tension eases.

The fish moves erratically and occasionally lunges. Keep your bracket overlapping the fish to fill the catch bar. If you're not overlapping, the catch bar slowly drains back down.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Tips**

* Higher-tier rods don't lock you out of shoals, but their faster catch rate makes higher-level shoals (with better loot) practical. Look for a better rod as you progress.
* Watch the tension bar as much as the catch bar. The most common mistake is letting loose and having the fish escape.
* Shoals are shared across all players, so busy shoals deplete faster. Check the supply and expiry before committing.
  {% endhint %}

#### Fishing Loot

A Fishing Shoal does not only harbour one type of fish, but can also reward rare specimen and even non-living things.

**Level 2 Shoals** (currently the **Hashibut Shoal**) appear less often than Level 1 Shoals and carry a smaller **Supply** (500 instead of 1,000 fish). Their minigame is tougher: the fish moves more erratically, the catch bracket is smaller, catch progress fills more slowly and drains faster, and you only have **30 seconds** instead of 45. Any working fishing rod can attempt them, but without the catch-rate boost of a higher-tier rod a successful catch is unlikely. Level 2 fish also award [**Shoalkeepers** Reputation](/pawtato-land/gameplay/the-world/reputation.md) up to higher ceilings than their Level 1 counterparts, and the Hashibut can be cooked into a **Fried Hashibut** (+3 Vitality for 24 hours) at the [Cooking Station](/pawtato-land/gameplay/buildings/crafting-stations.md).

The **chance for rare loot** *(everything except the base fish of a Shoal)* scales with the **Luck Stat** of the fishing Hero (1 LCK = 1% increased Chance).\

There is also various **bait** to increase the chance to catch certain fishes.
